SUMMARY:One To World Walk: Nature and Culture in Northern Central Park
DESCRIPTION:At more than 160 years old\, Central Park’s history could fill volumes. Come get a taste of its storied past with this walking tour through the park’s northern half. \nOn this walk\, equal parts walking tour and urban hike\, we’ll explore the northern end of Central Park to understand its natural and human history. We’ll begin at the site of Seneca Village\, the predominately African American community that was razed during the construction of Central Park in the nineteenth century. Walking northward\, we’ll pass recreation sites that were built in the twentieth century and then ascend into the hilly northern end of the park. We’ll walk along a stream bank and climb through dense woods to explore both the vistas from the Great Hill and a blockhouse built in 1814 in anticipation of a British invasion that never happened. We’ll finish at Amsterdam Avenue and West 110th Street\, near Columbia University\, where there are many options for dining\, drinks or coffee. \nOur route includes hilly terrain and wooded areas\, so wear comfortable walking shoes and outdoor clothes! Please also be sure to bring water. \nAbout the Tour Guide: Robert W. Snyder is professor emeritus of journalism and American Studies at Rutgers University and Manhattan Borough Historian. He is the author of “Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York” and coauthor of “All the Nations Under Heaven: Immigrants\, Migrants and the Making of New York”. He is a former Fulbright lecturer in American Studies in Korea and a member of the New York Academy History. DESCRIPTION:Come take part in the second installment of One To World’s summer book club\, where we dive into topical issues in American life through fiction. Join us in Central Park this time for a vivid look back into one of the darkest periods of American History with Octavia Butler’s critically acclaimed novel Kindred. \nOctavia Butler was one of the first and most prominent Black American science fiction writers\, but she diverged from her traditional genre to write this book about Dana\, a black woman who gets suddenly and inexplicably pulled back in time from 1976 California to a plantation in antebellum Maryland. There\, she lives among her ancestors including the white slaveholder who will become her great-great-grandfather\, and his slave\, her great-great grandmother. Kindred is offers a fictional\, but historically consistent “personal” account of living on a plantation. Snacks and drinks will be provided. \nPlease note that Kindred contains mature themes and language\, and may not suitable for all readers.
