SUMMARY:One To World Walk: The Squares - Union to Madison
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this exclusive walking tour of Gramercy Park and the Flatiron District. We will explore the urban design principles that inspired the city grid and learn how public parks like Madison and Union Squares were built to accommodate irregular spaces in the process of urban development. This is a special opportunity to learn about the architectural evolution of NYC from 1811 to today\, while getting to know the city from a new perspective! \nOur guide\, William Singer\, AIA\, is the Chief Plan Examiner for The City of New York Department of Buildings and an expert in the design and construction of large-scale public facilities. His major projects have included justice centers\, transportation hubs\, and cultural centers. Before joining the Department of Buildings he was a partner at Gruzen Samton\, a NYC & Virginia-based architecture\, planning\, interior design and systems engineering firm. A Fulbright fellow (Slovenia\, 1993-94)\, he holds a Master of Architecture degree from the School of Design at North Carolina State University\, as well as a Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004\, Singer received a City of New York Arts Commission Excellence in Design for the renovation design of El Museo Del Barrio. \nPlease login to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Virtual Meet Up: Story Circles
DESCRIPTION:As we kick of the new academic year\, join the second installment of our popular program: One To World Story Circles and make new friends! \nThrough One To World Story Circles we come together as a “community of curious hearts” to share stories across language and culture lines\, with the goal of building intercultural skills and forming international friendships. At this event\, each participant will take turns sharing responses to pre-determined prompts and respond to what other students share. The prompts will be provided in advance to give you time to gather your thoughts. Each prompt will revolve around your own unique cultural experiences and won’t require any additional research or preparation. Dr. Frank Dolce\, designer of these virtual story-sharing events\, will facilitate the story-sharing session. \nThis is your chance to make lasting connections with other students\, share your story\, and learn about other cultures represented in the program. Join us to lend your voice to this insightful and important event that may become an ongoing series! \nPlease login to register for this event.

SUMMARY:One To World Book Club in the Park: Kindred
DESCRIPTION:Come take part in the second installment of One To World’s summer book club\, where we dive into topical issues in American life through fiction. Join us in Central Park this time for a vivid look back into one of the darkest periods of American History with Octavia Butler’s critically acclaimed novel Kindred. \nOctavia Butler was one of the first and most prominent Black American science fiction writers\, but she diverged from her traditional genre to write this book about Dana\, a black woman who gets suddenly and inexplicably pulled back in time from 1976 California to a plantation in antebellum Maryland. There\, she lives among her ancestors including the white slaveholder who will become her great-great-grandfather\, and his slave\, her great-great grandmother. Kindred is offers a fictional\, but historically consistent “personal” account of living on a plantation. Snacks and drinks will be provided. \nPlease note that Kindred contains mature themes and language\, and may not suitable for all readers. You can visit this link for more detailed information.\n \nGetting the Book: Patrons of the New York Public Library can check out a copy of this book for free. Search the library’s catalog here for a physical copy near you or learn how to check out a digital version here using your phone or e-reader. If you’re not a library patron but you live or attend school in New York\, you can apply online for a digital library card here and get access to NYPL’s extensive online resources for free. Those not in New York can search for a copy in a library near them at this link. You can also purchase an e-book or paperback copy of Kindred from most online retailers for around $10. \n\nPlease login to register for this event.
