New York will be electing a new governor in November of this year and the primary elections will be taking place in just a few months. The election process in the U.S. is quite unique compared to most other countries and we have organized a panel discussion with experts in the field to help shed light on how it all works! \n  \nDuring this virtual talk\, you will hear from: \n\n\n\n\n\nAnika Michel\, Strategic Monitoring and Government Relations Attachée at Québec Government Office in New York. Anika previously worked in the Office of the New York City Public Advocate as Policy and Legislative Associate\, and is a former Fulbright grantee to Spain. Anika will speak to how government works in the U.S. on both a macro and micro level\, and as Co-Founder/Director of Marketing at Amplify Her\, she will also offer insight into the gender parity in elected offices\, both in New York\, and throughout the country.\nErin Stamper\, Elections Specialist\, Chatham\, New York. Erin is also the current Deputy Commissioner of the Columbia County Board of Elections in New York. DESCRIPTION:Did you love to read when you were a kid? Studies show that children who grow up around books are far more likely to succeed in school and find work as adults. However\, up to 61% of low-income families do not have any books for their kids at home. \n  \nThat’s where Brooklyn Book Bodega comes in. Brooklyn Book Bodega works with local schools and community centers to gather and distribute books to underprivileged families in Brooklyn. During this program\, you’ll volunteer with other international students to sort and stamp the Bodega’s books to prepare them for distribution to the community. This is a great opportunity to help New York’s schoolchildren develop a love of reading alongside other international students! \n  \nPlease note that we will travel together by ferry to the program. On the competitive circuit\, Mr. Lin earned first-prize finishes at both the Virginia Waring as well as the Lennox International Piano Competitions\, and took Third Prize in the Houston Symphony’s Ima Hogg International Competition\, for which he was featured in the Houston Chronicle. \nMr. Lin wears many hats outside performance: As an educator\, Lin has given lectures and masterclasses frequently in the Unites States and in China. Outside music\, he has become a self-taught financial writer\, winning prominent fintech outlet Seeking Alpha’s “Stock for The Summer Of 2018” Online Competition. Finally\, he is the proud co-founder of Piano League\, a multi-platform media outlet. DESCRIPTION:There’s no better way to get to know your community than through service! Join other international students and local New Yorkers at Fort Tryon Park for some fun in the sun\, all well helping keep New York’s nature healthy and beautiful. \nWe’ll be doing some light gardening activities\, including removing debris and invasive plant species\, weeding\, mulching and planting. Gardening tools and gloves will be provided\, just wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothes. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and your mask! \nThis is a great way to spend a day at one of New York’s most beautiful parks while making new friends and doing some good. \nPlease login to register for this event.
