Discover the coolest neighborhood in the world (Lonely Planet, 2017) on this walking tour of and Industry City!
The tour will begin at the Recycling Education Center of the largest recycling facility in North America. We will learn how this state-of-the-art facility, opened in 2013, has become a cornerstone of New York City’s recycling system and observe how they process over 500,000 tons of plastic, glass, metal, and paper that New Yorkers put into recycling bins each year! This interactive tour will also include the history, local geography, and waterfront land use of this industrial site.
Afterward, our group will visit Industry City, a 6 million square foot complex of repurposed warehouses which is now home to start-ups, artist studios, co-working spaces, and trendy restaurants. The tour will provide an overview of Industry City and its role in converting an abandoned industrial space into a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation. We will explore how this space is serving the local community as well as supporting small businesses and providing opportunities for entrepreneurs! We will end the day at the Food Hall, which showcases various cuisines from Brooklyn-based restaurants, for an optional post-program meal!
Don't miss the chance to explore how community revitalization efforts are changing the face of Brooklyn and creating new opportunities for local residents!
