for Purcell's Roots: Elizabethan and Jacobean fantasies for six violsa unique classical concert in Manhattan.

Parthenia Viol Consort and guests Annalisa Pappano, treble viol, and Motomi Igarashi, bass viol, present masterpieces from the sublimely creative Private Music of Elizabeth I and James I, and the Princes, Charles and Henry - works which point the way to Henry Purcell.

The ensemble’s choices of fantasias and dances for three, four, five and six viols range from works by John Taverner in the early part of Elizabeth’s reign to Henry Purcell himself, at the end of the 17th century. Repertoire is drawn from William Byrd, Robert Parsons, Orlando Gibbons, Giovanni Coprario, and John Jenkins, and features a suite by Matthew Locke, Purcell’s teacher, for the four viols of Parthenia. Each half starts with a unique sound: a fantasia for six treble viols by William Daman opens the concert, and after intermission, the ensemble will perform a fantasia for six bass viols by Alfonso Ferrabosco I.

The artists welcome the audience to join them immediately after the program for a talk-back, followed by a reception on the beautiful church grounds.
